The ecological value of a meadow depends heavily on its composition and management. A field dominated by a single cultivated grass species may have less biodiversity than a naturally diverse grassland containing many types of grasses and flowering plants. Native meadows can support a broader range of insects and other wildlife because they provide a variety of food sources, structures, and seasonal resources.

Tall grass can also influence the atmosphere of a landscape. Unlike rigid architectural structures or densely packed forests, grasses create an open environment with continuous visual movement.
